History of Smit Dye and Bleach Works

About Smit

Ab and Ans Smit
Four decades ago, in 1963 to be precise, Ab and Ans Smit started Smit Dry Cleaners in two garages in the Aïdastraat in Amstelveen in The Netherlands. A year later, pressing and ironing was added to their services. When the company’s activities grew and the original location became too small, the company moved out to Amstelhoek and a new business was opened on the Amstelkade 1. Gradually, they started cleaning for homes for the elderly, hospitals and companies.

Then the era of one-hour-service chemical cleaning arrived. Smit opened affiliates in Amstelveen, Oudekerk, Amsterdam, Aalsmeer and Mijdrecht. However, the management of all these affiliates became time-consuming and Smit was ready for something new. The affiliates were sold and Smit started dyeing and bleaching of textiles and stonewashing of jeans.

In 1987, the Dyehouse moved to a building that had become available on the Amsteldijk Noord 31 in Uithoorn. This building is five times the size of the workshop on the Amstelkade.

Erwin Smit
Erwin, Ab en Ans’ son, took over the company from his parents in 2002.  Erwin Smit is a perfectionist.  He did his professional training at the Detex in Amsterdam where he amassed his knowledge of textiles.

For clients and designers, Smit is constantly looking for the most fashionable and vivid colour effects.  He experiments with dyeing of delicate and hard-to-dye tissues.  The marvellous results of his efforts can be found in shops all over the country and abroad.
